MENTAWAI ISLAND
MENTAWAI TRIBE & MENTAWAI SURFING
Consist of four main Island, North Pagai, South Pagai, Sikakap and Siberut, about 100 km from west of West Sumatra coast. The tribe living in the Indian Ocean is named the Mentawai Tribe. Among the 4 islands Siberut Island is the largest but has the lowest population among them. Their culture and language is totally different from the people who live on Sumatra. Their culture goes back to the stone age, most of the old people decorate their body with tattoos. According to the legend, those are the oldest tattoos in the world.
The people are very professional hunter still using bow and poisoned arrow. Among their tradition is important to practice magic. The Magic-man, therefor, is important. He leads ceremonies, cures the ill, gives advice to the tribesman before they go out hunting, building a house, making canoes etc. There hundreds of island with beautiful beaches and coral reefs. Also the best place for surfing.
TOUR CONDITION
This is a challenging trek that will take you far from the tourist trail. Into the heart of the Mentawai Islands, deep in their jungles and with the indigenous people living their close to the nature.
A people in transition, these uncomplicated rainforest dwellers are struggling to maintain their traditional lifestyle surrounded by a world who is more and more modernizing. This trek is only recommended if you are prepared to accept very basic and often uncomfortable conditions.
The Mentawai Islands are in Indian Ocean, approximately 100 km to the west of Padang. The island is also a paradise for surfers. Your journey begins with an overnight boat crossing to Siberut, the largest island in the chain.
If there is any delay or cancellation because of the weather circumstances (f.e. the ferry can not leave or is stock somewhere else) we will depart on a later date. The costs of night and living till that date are for the client.
